Happy New Year!

Wow. 2009 was a doozy, and 2010 is starting with a BANG.
I will share our family Christmas letter (leaving out any Christmas well-wishings) with you as it reflects what 2009 was like for us. At the end I have added some December happenings that didn't make the Christmas letter.

I will also share that we signed some papers today, visited and apartment building, and unless something goes awry in the next 20 days, WE HAVE SOLD OUR HOUSE! If you'd like to be praying, we need to FIND a house in the next 3 months, and if you want to take a BIG leap of faith, you can pray that the "perfect house" we did find but is under contract might still come available. Our realtor says that is still a possibility based on some information she has.

Dear Friends and Family,

Another busy year for us, but God has blessed us in many ways. I will attempt to take you through 2009, although much has happened.

In January we had a lot of snow, and quite a few snow days. We of course observe snow days because the teachers I babysit for have the day off, and therefore so do we. Snug loved playing outside in the snow, Little Monkey Man did not, and #1 loved all the snow blowing and shoveling he participated in. He enjoys getting up and spending his day working out, so I’m sure he saw these snowfalls as prime opportunities! January also brought an updated bathroom for us! My mom and dad came and helped us install new flooring, lighting and a bathtub! Previous to this, our children had been in a small plastic tub on the floor or in the shower with daddy. They both enjoy swimming in the tub almost daily.

February was very busy and not a great month for health in our home. #1 had been experiencing quite a bit of weight loss and fatigue which we later found out was due to Grave’s Disease, and Little Monkey had not gained weight/developed any motor skills since at least the end of October. We spent a good deal of time at doctor’s appointments, which is always fun in the dead of winter.

In March we had all the health problems “fixed”. #1 underwent a procedure that has him back to normal. He enjoys working out daily, playing with the boys, and his job as a patrol officer here in _____. Little Monkey was hospitalized for seven very long days, and we believe God healed him from Celiac Disease. He underwent a surgical procedure that the doctors believed confirmed that diagnosis, only to discover within twenty-four hours that he did not have it. Praise God! He went home with special dietary regulations and has been growing like a weed ever since. He also began regular speech and physical therapies which he is currently still participating in but catching up more and more every day!

In April we celebrated Easter and enjoyed beautiful weather. The kids spent quite a bit of time outside in the sunshine getting the winter wiggles out. Snug participated in an egg hunt at #1's mom’s work, and won first prize for the second year in a row. Our dogs were happy to see activity in the backyard which had been void of small people since the fall. Most of our winter play had been in the front yard where there was less chance of extra goodies hiding in the snow on winter boots. #1, Snug, and I also planted our first garden, which yielded great results. #1 was very excited in April to be accepted on the county SWAT team. He has only been called out once, but his trainings are very informative and exciting.

May was another busy month. We enjoyed our third annual trip to Virginia Beach for #1’s softball tournament. He has a great team and we enjoy traveling with them. Although the weather was rainy at times, it was fun to be out as a family and spend time together away. It was too cold to swim at the beach down in Virginia, but warm enough to pull out the baby pool and splash almost daily in Ohio!

June marked the end of Draycare for the school year and the beginning of parks! We visited several new and several old favorites. Snug also attended Vacation Bible School for the first time, which he loved. Little Monkey’s first birthday was in June, and he celebrated with lots of friends and family in our backyard. It was so exciting to see how God had blessed him in his first year, which was an unbelievably hard year.

July was family camp for us, and we enjoyed a week away from home and got to see Nathan and Danielle (my brother and sister-in-law) and parents. We don’t see Nathan and Danielle very often as they live in Florida and it was an unexpected surprise to get a week with them. A month earlier we didn’t know they would be joining us! Little Monkey didn’t really care one way or another if he was at camp, but Snug loved every moment of the trip and still talks about it. #1 had to return home to work, but the boys and I stayed in Michigan for two more weeks as I did counselor training with five girls who graduated and nine new girls. On the very last day in July #1 and I celebrated our fifth wedding anniversary.

In August Snug turned three and I also had a birthday. Being three meant that he got to go to the dentist for the first time, which again, he just loved. I can’t say I was excited about my cleaning, but we were glad he was enthused! Snug is enthused about nearly everything. We were able to watch an Extreme Makeover home be built in our area and although we were not able to participate in/volunteer with the build, it was still very exciting. We went camping with #1’s family in central Ohio, where Snug enjoyed fishing with Grandpa. Topping the excitement list was that Little Monkey took his first step in August! He started officially walking in mid September.

Draycare started up in the end of August, but in September I started doing preschool with three of the kids, including Snug. Although I had done some supplemental activities with one of the kids who is now in kindergarten this year, this was my first time doing official three day a week set time sessions. We have a math and reading workbook that I use along with activities, stories, and projects of my choice. I have very much enjoyed getting back to teaching on a regular basis.

In September the kids and I participated in the second annual Zoo Walk for Huron Forest Camp Cherith (which will now be known as Huron Forest Camp CedarRidge). Both boys love animals, and it was a great day.

October is when autumn comes to Ohio. I’m aware that it technically starts in September, but the changing weather and colors wait until October for us. We took a trip to our local pumpkin farm for some fun in the straw, bounce house, and petting farm. I don’t remember where we got our pumpkins when I was little, but I am fairly sure we didn’t have all those amenities along with “the patch”. The boys enjoyed more nice weather and Little Monkey loved the piles of crunchy leaves. We knew Little Monkey Man had been having trouble hearing since the spring, along with multiple ear infections. He finally got tubes in his ears mid October and it was fun to see him discover noises he had never heard before. He also started using some sign language and saying a couple of words within a few weeks of the surgery!

Our house went on the market in November. Although we love our location and I love our house, with another baby on the way, we don’t think that two bedrooms and one bathroom is going to be practical in a few months. It is already a bit challenging with 2-5 extra children here besides our own a few hours each day, but once we have another one, we will have three who are here to stay all the time! We plan on staying in the area, so the move shouldn’t be too significant…just a bit stressful. Keeping the house clean and “perfect” all the time is proving to be no easy thing.
We spent Thanksgiving with Matt’s family complete with a parade (Blaze) of lights to start off the Christmas season.

And to the end of this letter, we can add that the house is now (in the process of being) sold! How exciting.

Also, as many of you know, but most of you do not, early December, just after this letter was mailed out, #1 was in a shooting at work while undercover. I had mentioned that something had happened at work, but until all investigations were finished, I really couldn't say anything. No one was hurt, and he is back to work as normal. Thank you for all of your prayers. I'm sorry that I can't provide more details, but this is the intranet and I must be careful.

See 2009 was QUITE the year :o) Happy New Year to all of you!!!!!

Like A Good Neighbor, We Are Not Here

Oh how I wish I was posting a Wordless Wednesday...but I have only been able to take one picture since Sunday with Snug's "photo shoot" because my camera cards are FULL. I have not budgeted the money to develop photos since October. I could, but there are other things that have been more important. Then I got a giftcard to Wal-Mart for Christmas that would have developed one card*. When I had the time to use it, I couldn't find it anywhere. I have searched the house over...it is gone. Soooo I budgeted enough in March that I could print 1/2 a card once we get paid. Stay tuned for pictures...

Did you do a double take with my title? It sounds a bit harsh, but I really feel that way. Back in September when we had our hurricane I promised myself that we would all be together more as neighbors. Well, it has partly happened. We have been over to our one neighbor's house at least once every two to three weeks for dinner, or a birthday, or the Superbowl. I go over and visit our other next door neighbor a couple of times a month and try to take some dinner to her weekly. But there is one thing I knew I needed to do more, and just have not. I need to have people HERE...at our house...in our space. I am not very neighborly in that way. Part of it is #1's work schedule, only being off on weeknights, no weekends. That doesn't make entertaining very easy. Another part of it is when the daycare kids walk out the door, sometimes as late as 5:00 I am so tired, and I don't want to clean for a new bunch of people right away. But when is it easy? Is it easy for our neighbors who both work full-time? No, but they are still faithful in inviting us over.

So as I planned dinner tonight (and had a Not Me! yeast style) and saw how much food we'd have and was so thankful our bathroom is (almost**) done I asked #1 if we should have our neighbors over for pizza. He readily agreed, seems how our 2 neighbor kids were already at our house*** and we had a ton of dough. I made a couple of quick phone calls and wah-la! Dinner party! And man was it fun. The only downside was I missed my mom's Bible study tonight at church and I love that group of women. Deb, I know you read and I am so sorry! I truly missed you guys!

It was so nice to sit around and talk and just enjoy our neighbors. And you know what? It wasn't that hard to get ready. No one cared what my house looked like (although for the record it was in pretty good shape ;o) and no one cared that we had pizza and carrot sticks and they had to bring their own drinks. So, I want us to be more "Like a good neighbor, the Drays will be here...not like a good neighbor, the Drays are not here."

*We have several camera cards because a generous friend gave us his camera and cards...that is partly why I am taking my photography class...I have a nice camera and no idea how to use it!
**I have to make a curtain for the window...other than that it is 100% done tonight!!!!!

A Visit To The Hospital

Thanks to everyone who sent e-mails, left messages, called our house, or replied to my tweets (and yes, I am pretty sure now I am using the correct terminology for that) about Baby J's testing at Children's yesterday. My parents were still here helping with our bathroom so I didn't take the time to post last night. Speaking of our bathroom, the trim is up and it is now up to me to get it sanded, holes filled, and painted. In my free time, right? The trim looks great, and I want to thank my dad again for all his hard work, and my mom for helping with the boys.
Here is how Baby J spent about 40 minutes yesterday at the hospital. This is the life. All cuddled up with his monkey being toted around in a wagon. I didn't realize until later that they had Dayton Police themed wagons or I surely would have picked one of those. Oh well, this one did the trick. He is "sweating" (thus the layers of clothing and blankets) into a small device that checks for cystic fibrosis.

I'm sure if he could speak he'd say "See? See what they are doing to me?". I snapped his photo quick and then stuck his arm back down to sweat a little more. He was pretty sleepy during the entire procedure. I'm not very medically minded, but I'll describe it for those of you who are interested. I nursed him while a lady put two electrodes on his arm to 'stimulate' the area. When she was done, she put this circle thing with a tiny tube coiled in it on a velcro band on his arm. This was covered by a piece of plastic to make him sweat more, and then wrapped in this cool dino wrap. He almost had pink with purple hearts, but she found the masculine one just in time. No one would have noticed though as it was covered by his shirtsleeves/Bundle Me/taggie/fleece blanket. When the test was done, she removed the tiny tube which now was partly filled with a blue liquid (an indicator of how much had been collected) and capped both ends of the tube with push pins...yep, office grade push pins! Then it was sent off to the lab.

Then came the taking of the blood. Among the things I can remember off hand, he was being tested for anemia, thyroid, glucose, calcium level, and platelets. We got a call today that all tests came back negative (as in positive news...that gets kinda confusing for me, I always have to ask, "so do they have it or no?"). You can see his cute bandaids here. He SCREAMED through the blood procedure but then was fine as soon as it was over.
No harm done. Just waiting to grow :o) His motor skills have just taken off lately. My parents saw a huge difference in him between now and two weeks ago. He rolls from his tummy to his back both directions, grasps even small toys and brings them to his mouth, pushes up on his tummy to look around, and is trying to "sit up" when we are holding him laying down.
Thanks for all the prayers!

My Husband Did NOT flush Elmo Down The Potty

Ok, here is #1's Not Me. Snug has had a few mishaps in the potty area in the last few days. It could have something to do with the fact that the bathroom was all tore up...that at one point there was no toilet, or that life has just been so, well, exciting he doesn't want to take the time to go. Anyway, he had a 'not urine' in the underwear yesterday and #1 was using the spatula to do the thing that spatula does. After a few minutes my mom and I heard "uh...that's not good" coming from the bathroom. One small pair of Elmo underoos went slip sliding down the toilet into the city sewer system. Goodbye "Melmo".

On a happier note, here is what the tub box has been used for today. Hours of fun were had by all, and when nap time is over, hours of clean up will have to happen because every toy from the upstairs is currently residing in this box.
No paint and no trim yet, but the blue paint I picked is close to this blue, so you can use your imagination :o)

I LOVE our new flooring. I think it is what I am most excited about...and I really thought the tub was what I would be most excited about. Again, no trim or paint...but I will do it ASAP.
So, there is a story behind this...scene. My parents don't normally hang out in my bathroom like this. However, when the toilet went back in, it wouldn't sit flat on the wax ring (if you don't know what I am talking about, hope you never will). SO, I laid on the floor with my hairdryer trying to melt it a bit, and my dad and mom sat like this and eventually the toilet sank back down to where it belonged.
Laying the floor...

Ok, this picture is for my mom, because we both really enjoyed seeing how it looks under the toilet. REALLY gross. This picture also gives you an idea of how bad our flooring was. This was under the carpet (not a good idea with small children in your house) and it was so bad looking and so hard to clean. It always looked dirty because of the holes and glue marks from the carpeting.
Just a cute Baby J picture. Notice how he is gaunt and fatigued looking due to the weight issue...I am still going between worrying about him and his progress to being totally disgusted with the whole thing because I know he feels fine and is eating and that Snug went though the same thing. I need to just not worry at all and give it to God.
This is Baby J smiling because his mommy is making him homemade yogurt for supper! He is saying "my mommy didn't burn it!" if you want to know the truth! I will see how it turns out, and if it does, I will walk all of you out there through how to do it. OR you can buy Ruth Yaron's "Super Baby Food" book and do it yourself with about 100 other things!
I had my mom take this picture for me to show you another way I am using this sling. I like him better on my back, but it is hard to get him up there tight without a spotter. He really likes being up and seeing what is going on.

And last, but not least, here is a video of the tub box being enjoyed by all. It will go out to the recycle next week, but until then, let the good times roll!

Living With 2 Kids and No Tub

There are captions under each picture...but they turned out tiny. I think if you click on the pictures you may be able to see the captions better...or click on "view all images." We still have to do trim work, painting (I will so miss a red peeling ceiling and walls), and flooring to complete. My dad and #1 have done such a great job!

Friday Funny Pages

Go to www.racecarsandrubyslippers.blogspot.com to see the originator of this fun.
I only have 3 funnies this week...and then updates on the bathroom and Baby J. So here we go!
I have been trying to teach Snug to say "Excuse Me" when he needs to get by someone, bumps into someone, or has bodily functions that need excusing. Not a big fan of many words for these functions, we simply say "tooting" to describe what happens down south. So after a particular tooting session the other day I asked Snug to say "excuse me". He said (and I HATE this word...it is used sooo many times a day) "why?". I explained that when you toot, you have to be polite and say "excuse me". He thought for a second, grabbed his bottom and said "Oh. Escuuse my bottom"!
Today while on the way home from Baby J's doctor's appointment Snug was singing screeching a song in the backseat as my mom and I were trying to talk. I said "(Snug) that is enough of that, thank you". To which he replied "You're welpome mamma!"
My last funny is that while I was singing to Snug and rocking him, he decided it was choose your own tune night. He would start a song and we'd sing it. I told him 'one more' and he asked for "beya beya" which really sounds quite a bit like "beer beer" when you say it out loud (yeah, go ahead and try)...and I asked him several times to repeat it. Finally I started to sing some of his favorites and he'd say "NO". Finally I started to sing "The B-I-B-L-E" and he said "Yes! The Beya Beya" I thought maybe our whisky cough treatment was catching up with us.
So I plan on posting some bathroom pictures soon. We've all been able to take baths (no shower yet). I have some cute pictures of Snug in the tub but no one else wanted to be photographed. Anyway, I have probably 30 some pictures, and I still haven't put them on the computer. I will, I promise!
Baby J hasn't gained any weight since last Friday's appointment. He will be getting 1-2 oz of formula after each nursing and then re-evaluated next Friday. I don't know why I am so hung up on the formula. Snug had to have all formula from 6 months on. I guess I was determined to do it differently this time. I've just been reading SO much literature and medical studies on what we are eating and I know what food is best for him. But the bottom line is that GROWING is what is best for him. BUT, then again we did this whole song and dance with Snug, even ended up at a gastrointestinal doctor and never found anything out. I will be fighting harder this time as I am better informed. He will also be seeing a cardiologist (same as Snug at this age) about his deep purple and cold hands and feet. Baby massage doesn't even seem to be helping at this point. The doctor is not concerned about his lack of gross motor skills, so that is a relief.

RSV, Our Tub, and Me

We got the call today that Baby J does have RSV...but there is nothing we can do but monitor him and if his breathing is labored take him to the ER. He is just miserable, and I am so glad my parents are here to help out. He wants to be held ALL the time. Please pray that his lungs stay clear and it doesn't develop into pneumonia. Snug is also complaining again about his ears hurting...the other ear too. We have 5 more days of antibiotics to go.

On a lighter note, we went to Lowe's and spent all of our hard earned envelope on our 'new bathroom'. I am so so excited! Well, not all the envelope money, but more than we thought we would be spending in one trip. We decided to open a Lowe's credit card to save the 10% then pay it off and close the account...so we bought everything we thought we'd possibly need, kept the receipt in case we bought too much and needed to return anything, and saved a bunch of money! And no, we don't normally use credit cards on anything, but technically we have the cash and will stick it in the bank and pay the bill. I will take pictures of before and after the demolition/remodel.

And finally ME! (yeah, you can stop reading, the interesting stuff is over). I am really enjoying having my parents here and help with the kids. We had a nice Christmas celebration with them today and I will post pictures later. I also made a quinoa and rice pilaf for supper, I'll share the recipe later if I remember! It was 65 deg today...amazing.

Just Another Tuesday? Never.

So my mom is here this week so we have a car to use and to see the boys. Our van is not fixed nor have we heard from the collision shop...but the Blazer has a "service engine soon" light on recently, so that is something, right?
Snug is trying the potty (again). Really Mamma and Bama are the ones getting potty trained. We are learning to set a timer a dozen or so times daily and watch carefully for any signs of "potty". Snug doesn't tell us when he has to go, just tells us he has gone (sometimes). However he told Chester our dog today that he had to go and we butted in on the conversation and rushed him in to try. Next step: tell someone who cares. I don't think the dogs need an alias. But should they ever, 'carpet dog' and 'tripod' should suffice.

Here the boys are taking a bath. I think the new tub is needed...soon. It is scheduled for December so if the boys just quit growing we'll be fine! For those of you who have never been here/don't even know us just stalk our blog we have no tub. We just have a huge stall shower. We are saving to pay for the bathroom remodel with cash-yeah FPU! Monday's Financial Peace University was about how to do mutual funds...I have to admit I was zoning a bit. Being on the "Getting Out Of Debt" step makes the "Get Mutual Funds" step look VERY far away!

But we will do it! We will do every step! Here is Snug in next year's Halloween costume. It was sold three weeks ago for $16.88 and I got it today for $1.68. Not the cheapest costume I've gotten for him, but close. His Mickey Mouse costume last year was only $1.09. Oh well, win some, lose some I guess :oP
