Weight Check

Today was our final visit to our pediatrician. #1 and I have decided to go with our family doctor. He and his wife (his head nurse) are very pro breastfeeding and pro mothers having a say in medical decisions for their children.

We were supposed to have a weight check yesterday but because of the cold and school delays my Draycare schedule was mixed up and we couldn't go. When I called to explain, I was informed, in so many words, that it was excused this time but we had better be in first thing this morning. I don't recall missing walk in weight checks as a capitol offense. Also, when I checked to make sure the fax from my lactation consultant went through the nurse on the phone informed me there was a note from our (former) doctor disregarding what had been reported.

It wasn't easy telling the pediatrician's office that we were done but our regular doctor wasn't there, the nurse practitioner was so it was a bit easier. We did want an end weight though to make sure we could compare it accurately with the family doctor this afternoon. He weighted 14 lbs 3 oz both places, another gain. Our former pediatrician had ordered some blood tests to check for anemia and a sweat chloride test to test for cystic fibrosis. We are going to go ahead and have the tests done, just to be on the safe side. None of the tests will hurt him, and insurance should cover them. He is gaining slowly, and I will admit that. However, he is gaining!

I got this from my cousin in an e-mail recently...I thought it was worth sharing.

The following is the philosophy of Charles Schultz, the creator of the 'Peanuts' comic strip. You don't have to actually answer the questions. Just read straight through, and you'll get the point.

1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.
2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.
3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America.
4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.
5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor and actress.
6. Name the last decade's worth of World Series winners.

How did you do? The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields. But the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten. Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.

Here's another quiz. See how you do on this one:

1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.
2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.
3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.
4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.
5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.

Easier? The lesson: The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are the ones that care.

Just food for thought...

I'm so glad you decided to change doctors... I hate how the old doctor was making you feel - not cool! Hopefully (and praying that) everything goes well with the new doctor.

ps. I don't think a pillow would have helped, his head was on the wrong side of the bed!! But, maybe we'll try it tonight. :)

I really liked the thoughts at the bottom of your post.

Sounds like your pediatrician needs some customer relations consulting. You can't only tell people what they want to hear, but you also have to listen to people or they won't want to listen to you.

Ditto 'Cobi'.
And props to you for even telling the office that you were switching. I was done fighting with our pediatrician so I didnt even tell them that we werent going back. it actually got so bad we were considering suing.... depending on how tests came back for Bug.
Also- I know this is probably a dumb question, but how does the sweat test work? I've heard of it, but still wonder how it works- especially since it's so cold.

I'm not 100% on how the sweat test works...he is supposed to bring lots of clothing with him that can layer. Something will be stuck to his skin where he sweats a lot and it will collect and analyze his sweat. We go get it done Monday so if you want more info I can tell you at church Wednesday.
